.: Finished Look :.

This spider project is going to be spread out over years, but 1 st part would be looking for a way to make a hard shell and use what is made from this project in to a Halloween yard ornament. I have since taken the mini-itx computer and used it in another case. I still plan on using it for the brains of the finish project of a walking spider.

2 above pictures are taken on holloween as I get ready to set things up for the 1st year.

Quick Look at things:

The idea came from talking from some of the regulars on gideontech IRC main channel. I thought about it for a while and then using clay I started doing the design of the 1st spider. So you know I really dont like spiders that much, but I have enjoyed this project. This is the 1st one as I started putting it together.

I did play around with it a little and got myself into trouble, I was told it does not go in the pies and that I needed to find something to do besides get in her way. Kate was nice enough to let me get a few pictures before she evicted me from the kitchen.

The legs proved to be to thin and not ones that would support the weight I was looking for, Plus I wanted something meaner looking than a daddy long leg spider. My 2nd attempted turned out well and I like it a lot better up to the part when I baked it in the toaster oven (anyone for spider leg toast?).

I think this little guy was over cooked. Still a decent model to work off of, I did take him to live on my monitor for the next couple of years while I worked at Wellpoint, inc. as a Unix programmer.

Over all we are wanting to fit a 8"x8" computer in the body and a full size PSU in the head area. legs were made out of PVC pipe and fun fuk yarn, Stuff gives it a nasty look like a real hairy spider leg.

I needed to get a more of a black / read background on the legs, so I used Krylon Fuson to pain the legs and body parts for the better look.

The body was made with formed with smooth-on products. Plastic for the shell and putty for making the mold, but building the main part of the body I used the styrofoam from a crafts store. Below is the main body covered in the molding meterial, as it drys (about 20 mins) I place my final spider that I sculpted next to the body for a size differance. I am also getting ready to cover the rubber with plaster so it will keep its shape while I poor the plastic.

Nothing like making a big mess while I do this, if I spill any on the carpet, my new home would be under the tree in the back yard. Might have to get a dog to have a dog house to sleep in.

.: Thank you! :.
